It is expected from every new employee that they raise the bar for that role and take it to heights not attained by their predecessor. Based on this, take another look at your resume and see if it reflects how passionate you are about the field. This implies you have gone above and beyond in your old position and you are hungry to achieve more and improve yourself.

Your drive should be on display, and there’s a good reason for that, too: your potential employer will like to see that you are self-motivated to achieve goals on your own without having to be motivated by others. Does your resume reflect how you implemented solutions in the workplace that improved workflow? Were you able to achieve or even surpass your goal? Highlight those major projects that demand a lot of initiative which you have embarked on and accomplished through certain activities like taking extra classes online, going back to actual class for tutorials or trainings, networking, or reading specific books just for that purpose.

*Explain the purpose of sending your resume

*Get the employer interested in your resume

*Target the resume to a specific position or career field

Effective cover letters are clear, to the point, and brief. In less than 3 to 4 paragraphs, it should accomplish its purpose. Paragraphs should be split into greetings, the opening, the body, and the closing.

The objective statement is no longer considered appropriate for your resume. No matter what you say your objective is, potential employers know your ultimate objective is to secure the job. So what should you include in its place? At this point, there are 2 options.

Write an introduction or summary that highlights your most important accomplishments and skills.

Do not include a summary or introduction at all.

The introduction should be placed immediately after the header information and must serve the following purposes:

Highlights the most important parts of your resume.

Attracts the reader and encourages them to continue reading.

Remember, the introduction isn’t absolutely necessary, so it is better you leave it out completely than have a poor one.

If you have a GPA of less than 3.0, avoid putting it on your resume because it is likely to have a negative effect. Your resume is supposed to present you in the best possible light and shouldn’t show any sign of weakness. Also, in most cases, only investment banking and consulting really care much for your GPA. That said, some other companies such as telecommunication companies might use GPA to filter out people because they receive so many candidates annually. Most professionals leave their GPA off their resumes after they have been away from school for 3 years—except, of course, when it’s an exceptionally high score.

Do all you can to associate yourself with reputable brands, even if you haven’t directly worked with them. Have you ever had a client from the fortune 500 companies? Were notable venture capitalists willing to back up your startup (that’s if you had a startup)? Have you ever been featured in any important publications? Those popular brands have a way of standing out or attracting the attention of whoever will scan through your resume; try to include them.

Examples:

Through follow-ups and meetings with senior leadership, I was able to strengthen relationships with 7 strategic partners, including Emirate Airlines, Procter & Gamble, and Coca-Cola.

Hired and managed 6 students from Yale and Penn, including graphic designers, salespeople, and programmers.

Collaborated with Zagat’s “Restaurateur of the Year” Steve Starr to have a Philadelphia-wide Restaurant Week at eight different venues.

Work Experience

This section is where you detail the paid work experiences you’ve had. This list will include everything from internships to your previous 4 jobs or your entire work history for the last decade. This is not where you include volunteer work. Ensure that you name this section to reflect that it is a paid experience section; you could try “Work Experience” or “Work History.” This section ought to be above “Education” except you are a fresh graduate.

This section should have your important achievements such as increased responsibilities or revenue by 25%; however, do not make this part unnecessarily long. You can give details when you are called for the interview.

Mention the name of the organizations or companies where you did your internship, the city and the state as well as the positions held and the length of the employment. You should also briefly describe your achievements and if possible, put them in 2-4 bullet points.

Mention the promotions you’ve had in this section. When listing your responsibilities, begin with your most valuable experiences first. This because employers have limited time to go through your resume and will most likely skim from top to bottom—you don’t want your important achievements to be towards the bottom where they might go unread.

Online applications have evolved and as such, objective statements are somewhat old-fashioned. However, if you are certain that your resume is going directly into the hands of the recruiter or hiring manager, then it becomes important. If you are a fan of the objective statement concept, you should consider including a professional summary statement in its place. A summary statement explains who you are and what you have already accomplished, unlike the objective statement which expresses what you intend to accomplish. Detailing accomplishments makes you more desirable to the company. No longer are you someone looking out for themselves, you are now someone who can bring value to the position and the organization.
